January 28, 2004 HGST - Successful testing of 3GB/sec transfer rate for SAS
Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (Hitachi GST) announced successful testing of 3Gb/s Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) disk drive interoperability with LSI Logic silicon. The LSISAS1064 controller, in a Host Bus Adapter configuration, enabled communication with Hitachi's enterprise hard disk drive ASIC. Verification of the 3Gb/s data transmission represents a key milestone for SAS and is a signal to the industry that development of the new high-speed storage interconnect is proceeding on schedule.

Toshiba Storage Device Division (SDD) announced the development of a 0.85-inch hard disk drive (HDD), the first drive to deliver multi-gigabyte storage in a sub-one-inch form factor. Expected to be available in 2GB and 4GB capacities, Toshiba will start sampling the new drive in summer 2004, with mass production to begin in late 2004.
